It has been a steady drumbeat: Americans are not saving nearly enough for retirement, and they will pay the price later, by having to totter into the office until theyre 98. But new data seem to show that people are not nearly as spendthrift and heedless of the future as is commonly believed. In the United States, almost 40 percent of all household financial assets are retirement assets, according to the Investment Company Institute, a trade organization. Thats up from 24 percent 20 years ago. As more companies move away from automatic pensions, workers have been accused of failing to contribute enough to their optional 401(k) plans or I.R.A.s. But last year in particular, the incessant warnings appear to have registered. In 2006, accumulations for retirement rose 11 percent from 2005, for a total of $16.4 trillion, the institute reports. There are never any guarantees, but at that rate, life in the later years actually stands a chance of being relaxed and carefree
